So, as I pursue my research into radio I have a few preliminary questions that some of you might be able to answer...
What is the average cost to run a typical commercial radio station?
What about LPFM stations?
College radio stations?
Is there a text or source that could answer questions like these?
What is the basic minimum of equipment needed for an LPFM station to broadcast?
Approximately what would it cost?
What about radio in an emergency?
Could a radio station be run by a generator in a disaster?
Has the FCC stopped issuing LPFM licenses? If so, why?

Greetings Lee,
let me try to help answer some of the questions as they pertain to an LPFM like WRIR..
average cost-at least 20,000 a year - could be done for less, but skimping on programming, equipment, and marketing expenses can be quite counterproductive especially if you're trying to reach out to your community and provide "quality" programming that people really want to listen to.. licensing good syndicated news programs accounts for a good chunk of our budget at WRIR-- it pays off because it creates a niche that other stations dont fill.
rent, power, equipment, marketing, administrative costs.. all figure in to this too.. it aint cheap!
prometheusradio has alot of good info - www.prometheusradio.org
as far as the other information, i will try to put you in touch with our operations director-- yes, we have a generator since we're the "official emergency broadcast outlet" for richmond... if power fails, we still need to be on the air... that generator was pretty costly too, but worth it...
basic equipment include an antenna, transmitter, console, and all the peripherals of that setup
plus, you have to find a place that's legal and optimal to transmit from, and, of course, make sure you're broadcasting at the right frequency and voltage
